  • Candidate and Client beware

    Clients and candidates a like should always beware of the "used car salesman" type of recruiter.

    A mentor once told me "even a blind squirrel can find a nut in a field full of acorns".It's a fun thing to say but it also has deep meaning. If some fly by the seat of his pants recruiter calls you and acts like they have all the business in the world during this economy you should ask your self "do they really or are they just getting lucky because the market picked up?" This is a serious question to ask because as of lately we have seen a number of "bush league" level people posing as recruiters. Some have been sued by their clients and others have winged in resumes to clients for candidates that they didn't even represent hoping to get lucky. These people are not only clumsy with sensitive information but they can also be dangerous to you as a candidate or a client.

    I'm all for good competition. It's what gets me out of bed in the morning and drives me to succeed. There are a handful of quality companies that I love to compete with because they are "A" players. Lately there have been a lot of C- and below individuals trying be something they are not. This is dangerous in the following ways and you should always do some recon before giving these individuals your positions or your resume.

    CLIENTS: A bad recruiter who sites "linkedin" as their claim to fame is nothing more than a master of the obvious. Everyone is connected to everyone these days and there's a difference in name dropping people you are "connected to" and being modest about the heavy real-life relationships you have with best of the best.  A bad recruiter will saturate your job with the wrong candidates and spread your private information amongst all the incorrect pools. This has a tendency to taint your requisition. When the better candidates hear that everyone that should never have been considered have actually been considered then they will never take your position seriously. It will be assumed that there is something wrong with either the position or the company.  Find a recruiter that  knows your industry fully. Many claim to but few really do.

    CANDIDATES: I get called ALL the time by candidates that wish they never let some other agency touch their resume. One morning they're thinking about looking for a new job (confidentially) and the next thing they know their resume has been saturated all over the market by a desperate recruiter who cares more about a possible fee than your career longevity. Like an open position that has been marketed in all the wrong ways can loose its luster agreat candidate  can be deflated by having the wrong representation. Do your home work and look for these simple signs:

    - do they seem to slick or have a weird laugh
    - are they overly braggadocious
    - have they sent your resume off without your approval
    - have they ever been sued by a client and lost.

    Remember, a recruiter is going to be your representation on an opportunity. Think of it as a sports agent. Once you've been presented by that individual then you've made your bed and other firms such us Gillian Executive Search will be unable to turn that ship around for you.
