Request for Talent: It's Safe To Come Out Now

Bill Murray and a Groundhog inside a truck

Ok, the worst is behind us and there are more green pastures ahead. The last 3 years have been dominated by market rate and affordable multifamily housing. In 2016 we are seeing a growing demand for Office, Retail and Hospitality development and construction, which is fantastic. The construction market is still reeling from the lack of sufficient talent in the market. The desire to switch companies and advance one’s self has been replaced with a “hunker down” mentality. The fear being that one will leave a safe position and land with a company that will fizzle. I understand that thought process. It’s been concerning for a while but I’m here to tell you that it’s SAFE TO COME OUT. Don’t fear the shadow of the great recession any longer. Financing is back in play and real estate is rocketing forward to new heights once again.

Join a new company on the upswing! Don’t wait because this year will be a fast paced “musical chairs” and your seat will get taken and you’ll be stuck in your same position for who knows how long.

So Long 2015, HELLO 2016!

Hello 2016

Hello Everyone,

It’s the end of 2015 and what a year it was. I’ve never experienced anything like it. My wife gave birth to our wonderful twins (boy and girl) and what a handful it was. I think I averaged about 2 hrs of sleep a night for about 6 months straight. I was a complete zombie. On top of that we bought a wonderful house built in the 70’s that I had to renovate all the while trying to run the shop here at GES. I know some clients saw a dip in our production which is normally 100/100 and I must apologize whole heartedly for that.  I’ll make it up to you.

You will find myself and GES to be fully re-energized in 2016. I’m ready to go and real estate is getting more and more exciting with several product types breaking ground. The Request for Talent in Market Rate multifamily, affordable housing, retail, hospitality will be very strong.  Affordable came on very strong in the last quarter of 2015 and I expect to see it continue to surge. Retail and Hospitality are ramping up as well and we should see some serious progress in those areas.

For clients, 2014 and 2015 were years of hard-to-get candidates. Some were still living in shell shock from what happened in 2008-2012 and weren’t ready to move around, others were insulated from the job market due to companies paying higher wages to keep them from being recruited away.  I’m seeing some of that melt away and higher quality candidates are replacing many of those lower quality ones that have been hanging around the market.

I look forward to working with so many of you and we will have some surprises up our sleeve. Not to give too much away, but GES has partnered with a leading tech company to produce an online product specifically geared to real estate development, construction management and architecture based positions across the country. Stay tuned.

Happy Holidays!!!

Request for Talent: You Should Tailor Your Resume

Request for Talent: You Should Probably Tailor Your Resume
Resume Tips and Tricks 101

You really should. When you apply for a job you should tailor your resume according to the job’s responsibilities and requirements. Tailoring your resume does not mean make stuff up by adding skills and duties you don’t have experience in. Where it is relevant and where you have the experience make those adjustments and highlight the qualifications you have in common with the requisition.

You don’t want to match a job description word-for-word but it is important to include similar terms and hot buttons that are in the job description. This will make your resume pop and reassure the reader that you are qualified for the position. Remember, some positions/searches aren’t being run by the heads of a department but by Human Resources and most HR departments are mainly focused on HR duties which include hiring but that doesn’t mean they are 100% knowledgeable about every position so “help them help you” by letting your resume speak clearly to the position’s objectives. They could be sitting there with the job description right next to your resume searching for the key terms to quantify a fit. If you have a sloppy resume you might get passed over.

This is a simple task that gets overlooked so often. If you’re serious about being considered you should take the extra time to make the changes.

Helpful Tips:

  • Have a “master copy” of your resume
  • Copy your “master copy” to a separate word doc and make those changes perhaps saving that version for future positions similar
  • Be realistic. If you don’t have what the job requires don’t apply.

Time and time again we see candidates just sling in some dusty old resume and say “Set up a meeting and I’ll explain my background to them”. That NEVER works. Why would a client stop to meet with someone about a critical and detail oriented position if they don’t even take their own resume seriously? They won’t and they don’t so make sure you keep your resume updated and on point for anything you’re applying.

Remember, “If you can't sell yourselfyou can't sell anybody else”
